WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

WOODBURY Mrs A. J. Kennedy presided over a good attendance at the tenth annual meeting of the Woodbury Women’s Institute. There was a good attendance present. An invitation to attend the Arundel Institute's birthday party was accepted. Thanks were extended to Mr A. J. Kennedy for making two trays for the new crockery.

The annual report and balancesheet showed a successful year, and thanks were extended by the president to all who had helped her to make it so, especially the secretary and treasurer, Mrs Baker and Mrs Baxter for taking charge of the competitions, and Mesdames Cooling and Hammond for their success with the sales table. Mrs G. A. M. Macdonald, a visitor from the Federation, congratulated members on the excellence of the report and balance sheet. Bouquets and shoulder sprays were presented to the retiring president and the secretary and to Mrs Williams, a past president.

The following officers were elected: Miss E. L. J. Davies (president), Mesdames Kennedy, McLeod, L. E. Williams, S. C. Chisnall, W. Tait, W. Mallinson, Shaw, Baxter, H. Cooling, H Wooding, M. Wooding, McEvey, Misses Williams, Cooling, Thornley, P. Harper and R. Hammond.

Mrs J. M. H. Tripp was warmly welcomed and spoke of her recent trip abroad, and showed postcards of the many places of interest she had visited.

The competitions resulted as follows: Specimen bloom (smaller flowers), Mrs Bennett 1, Mrs McLeod 2, Mrs Scotney 3; larger flowers, Mrs Williams 1. Mrs Tait and Miss Davies equal 2, Mrs Baker 3.

Mrs Scotney was the winner for the Davies cup for the most points gained during the year.

WINCHESTER Miss J. Davey presided over the monthly meeting of the Winchester Women’s Institute. Motions of sympathy were passed with Mrs Lewis and Miss Davey. Mrs J. J. Kenny was welcomed back after her illness. Mrs D. A. Pearce and Miss L. Priddle were appointed delegates to the annual meeting of the South Canterbury Federation. The golden thread was read by Mrs J. C. South. Mrs F. M. Martin gave a talk on her trip to America, for which she was accorded a vote of thanks. The competitions for the afternoon resulted as follows: Premier bloom, Mrs South 1, Mrs Kenny 2 and 3. Shrubs, Mrs Kenny 1, Mrs South 2 and 3. Collection of three jams, Mrs South 1, Mrs I. Kilgour 2. Single ladies, permier bloom, Miss K. Sauer 1 and 2. Collection of jam, Miss Davey 1. The hostesses were Mesdames South, Pearce and Kilgour. BURKE’S PASS There was a good attendance of visitors and members at the second birthday party of the Burke’s Pass Women’s Institute. Mrs Scott presided.

Competitions for the year resulted as follows:—Mrs Anderson 1, Miss G. Mackintosh 1, and Miss E. Don 3. Oldest competitor, Mrs Smart. Items were presented by Mrs Strang, Miss Brown, and the Burke’s Pass school children. Games were won by Mrs Ballantyne, Mrs G. Green and Mrs Strang. A new member, Mrs D. C. Kidd was nominated. Congratulations and good wishes were received from the Kimbell, Ashwick Fla", Sherwood Downs and Fairlie Institutes, also the Fairlie W.D.F.U. The cake, which was presented by Mrs Anderson, was iced and decorated by Mrs Whyte and Mrs McCarthy. The candles were lit by Mrs Letham and extinguished by Norma McKinnon. The cake was cut by Mrs Anderson. Sorrow was expressed at the impending departure of two members from the district, Mrs Anderson and Mrs Letham.
