OBITUARY

MR W. C. ALLNUTT The death occurred at Sydney on April 11. of Mr William Charles Allnutt, formerly of Timaru, in his 79th year. Mr Allnutt. who was well-known in educational and bowling circles throughout the Dominion for manyyears, was one of a band of Victoriantrained teachers who came out to New Zealand in 1882 to serve under the Otago Education Board. He was first appointed to the Lawrence School as assistant, and in 1893 he was transferred to the Kaikorai School as first assistant. Seven years later Mr Allnutt was appointed headmaster of the school, a position which he held until his retirement 26 years later. During those years he was a vertiable tower of strength to the school, his intense application to his work, his faithfulness to duty and his wise rule winning for him the respect and confidence of the staff, the pupils and the parents. On his retirement he went to live in Auckland, and later resided at Timaru before returning to Australia. Mr Allnutt was one of the foundation members of the Kaikorai Bowling Club and was also a member of the Roslyn Club, and as a keen player he won many prizes in tournaments and club contests. In 1907 he was elected the first president of the Dominion Bowling Council. He also took an interest in cricket. Mr Allnutt was an active adherent of the Methodis; Church, and gave long service to the cause of Freemasonry.
