PLEASANT VALLEY

FAREWELL TO POPULAR RESIDENTS Recently friends from all parts oi Pleasant Valley and surrounding districts assembled to say farewell to Mr and Mrs J. Brophy and family, who are leaving Pleasant Valley after many years’ residence there., to make their home at Wakanui. The esteem in which the guests of the evening were held was exemplified by the large and representative gathering present Mr H. Hill, who presided, expressed regret that the district was losing such popular residents and extended to them all on behalf of the Pleasant Valley residents best wishes for a happy and prosperous future. Mr H. Bailey endorsed Mr Hill's remarks.

The Rev. Father Fogarty. Messrs A. Coleman. G. Crotty and Scott expressed similar sentiments.

In making the presentation of two chairs and a wallet of notes to Mr and Mrs Brophy, a handbag each to Misses Cecilia. Margaret, Teresa and Cathie Brophy, a week-end case to Miss Joan Brophy and a fountain pen to John Brophy, Mr J. Lysaght said that the family must be pleased and gratified at seeing such a large gathering present. He felt honoured in being asked to make the presentation and wished them all happiness in their new home. In reply Mr Brophy said that this would be remembered as one of the outstanding incidents of his life. He thanked the speakers for their remarks and also those who had arranged the function. Mr Brophy said that Pleasant Valley would always have a warm corner in his heart. They would be delighted to welcome any of their old friends to Wakanui. The guests were accorded musical honours. FAREWELL BY TENNIS CLUB A very pleasant afternoon was spent when members of the Pleasant Valley Tennis Club entertained Misses Margaret, Teresa. Cathie. Joan and Mr John Brophy, prior to their departure from the district. The president of the club 'Mr R. Wilks), the vice-president (Mrs H. Bailey) and the club captain (Mr G. H. Women made eulogistic reference to the support they had given the club and assured them of a warm welcome whenever they re-visited Pleasant Valley. Mrs Bailey made the presentation which took the form of crystal for the Misses Brophy and a pocket knife for Mr John Brophy. Miss Margaret Brophy in acknowledging the gifts assured members that they had spent many happy times on the courts and would certainly be revisiting Pleasant Valley. Mr John Brophy also briefly replied. PERSONAL Mr and Mrs J. Brophy and family left on Monday for Wakanui where they will reside.
