After days of travel we came to the banks of a broad dark sluggish river and upon its banks were hordes of crocodiles, which came rushing towards us. King Saro terrified at the sight, burst his bonds and bounded off into the jungle. The pygmies soon gave up the chase and King Saro escaped; no doubt to go back to his little hut on the banks of the b-pa-ee and his printing press. The pygmies taking my brother and myself ran towards the crocodiles shouting joyfully. We were horrified and fuily expected to be torn to pieces by the ferocious beasts but, the crocodiles to our great surprise and relief, sank down upon the ground and the pygmies climbed upon their backs and made signs to us to mount also. This we did, and to our surprise found that the crocodile gait was easy and pleasant, the motion being a gliding one and without jolt. We proceeded to the river into which the crocodiles immediately plunged and swimming lightly we were not even wet. The pygmies, with us as prisoners, travelled for three days and nights upon the river with occasional camps to relieve the crocodiles, and to cook food, which consisted chiefly of roast monkey which the pygmies brought down with their arrows.
