Successful Competitors Now that the Inter-club competitions have closed the points gained by South Canterbury Club members have been ascertained and trophies, club badges and date bars have been allotted. In the Women’s Section Miss E. White wins the Fraser Cup with 40 points and Miss C. Wood wins the Cameron Cup with 24 points. The following members have earned club badges. Miss C. Wood, 24 points; Miss F. Hart, 16 points; Miss H. Clarke, 14 points. Date bar—Miss E. White, 40 points. Points gained by other members:— Miss L. Brooks 19, S. Oliphant 14, R. Dale 13, M. Pullin 12, D. Strachan 10, J. Dale 10. Men’s Section Ralph Mehrtens wins the Wallace Cup with 601 points and V. Hadlee wins the Mcßae Cup with 584 points. Date bars were won by R. Mehrtens 601, V. Hadlee 581, R. Rodgers 49, F. O’Gorman 40, H. Cloake 44, J. Strachan 38, S. Allom 35, T. Shivas 39, J. Donaldson 25, F. Walker 211, D. Squires 221, H. Shea 204. Club badges were earned by H. Allchurch 49, V. Mcßay 30, M. Drake 18, N. Rees 20, J. Glover 19, W. Young 15, K. E. F. Clarke 12. The South Canterbury Club was successful in winning the Inter-Club Scratch Competition and will hold the Shea Cup. The South Canterbury Club secured 350 points and Country Clubs 151 points. OPENING OF HARRIER SEASON AN AID TO PHYSICAL FITNESS With the advent of winter sports, cross-country running provides possibly the best and safest aid to real physical fitness of any sport in the modem sports calendar. In this district the sport is increasing in popularity and already this season officials from the different clubs report that increased membership is confidently anticpated. The controlling body has wisely guarded the activities of the sport, and has so arranged the season’s competitors’ events that keenness and enthusiasm are aroused amongst the runners, and the sport of cross-country running is fast becoming one of the foremost in the district. To any young men who are interested an invitation is extended through these columns to join up with any of the four local clubs. The following are the addresses of the secretaries of the different harrier clubs. Anglican Club, J. Knowles, c/o National Bank, Stafford Street. Presbyterian Club, D. Drennan, c/o Target Stores, Church Street West. Timaru Club, E. Walker, c/o John Jackson, c/o Stafford Street South. West End Club, S. Jackson, c/o C.F.C.A., Timaru. In addition any of the above clubs will admit Secondary School pupils to free membership. Throughout this Dominion there are hundreds of youths and men, some still in their teens, and others in the twenties, and thirties, and even in the forties who will be taking part in the keen club runs. One of the attractions of crosscountry running is that it is a sport taking its devotees over a variety of types of country, up and down hills, across fields of plough and pasture, through woodland and over the open downs, and wherever they go they will add to the quest of physical fitness. Encouragement to Juniors Much of the success of the sport is due to the encouragement given to juniors. Special competitive events are arranged for juniors, and every care is taken that the sport is not too strenuous for their participation. 'One of the clubs has been fortunate in having senior members who take special care to see that the juniors are catered foxwithin their right limits. For the senior and more seasoned runner the competitive side of the sport creates an enthusiasm that is shown In keen and healthy club rivalry, and the principal events in the range of the inter-club fixtures are looked forward to with keen anticipation and hopeful realisation. Opening Club Runs The Timaru Club has arranged its opening run for Saturday, April 22 and the run will be held from Caroline Bay. The Presbyterian Club will hold its opening run on Saturday, April 22. The starting point has yet to be arranged.
