CRATAEGUS PRUNIFOLIA.— This a native of North America, is a very useful shade tree for the small garden. Reaching up to 20 feet its dense leafy branches are often wider than they are high and sometimes reach the ground. It has two seasons of beautys the clusters of white flowers being followed in due course by bright red fruits which fall with the leaves in autumn. It is one of the best of the towering thorns because the leaves may assume glorious shades of rich glowing crimson before falling.
