It has been suggested more than once in this column that it is a long way from certain that the connections of Ajax will seek a clash with Defaulter—so long as the New Zealand colt remains unbeaten. Confirmation of this idea come: in a Melbourne paperone which has consistently lauded the Australian champion. It says:—“lt is on the cards that Ajax and Defaulter may not meet at Randwick, as the owner of the latter will most likely start the New Zealander in the Autumn Plaite on the first day of the A.J.C. carnival, ; and Ajax will be reserved for the All-aged Plate and C. W. Cropper Plate of a mile and seven furlongs respectively." While Ajax is tackling the short races, Defaulter is likely to be running on the longer w.f.a. events.
