B. E. Calder, of the Waitaki Boys’ High School, has been awarded the second prize in Class A of the Royal Empire Society’s essay competition.

The Rev. E. P. Blamires, formerly youth director of the Methodist Church of New Zealand, will attend the annual conference of the Episcopal Methodist Church in the United States in April as the accredited representative of the Dominion Church.

Major-General Sir Andrew McCulloch, D. 5.0., who recently retired from the position of colonel of the Highland Light Infantry and the command of the 52nd (Lowland) Division after a distinguished career, left Auckland by the Aorangi for Honolulu on Tuesday.

Mr W. G. Fisher, of Lower Hutt, who has been in the stationmaster’s office, Wellington, for some years, has received notice of transfer on promotion to be chief clerk of railways at Bluff. Mr Fisher is a prominent golfer, and has been a member of the Hutt Club for eight years, and its honorary secretary for five years.

The death of two life members, Messrs A. L. Barker and T. Hamlyn, was referred to at yesterday’s annual meeting of the South Canterbury Hunt. The Master (Mr C. L. Orbell) said that In the early days Mr Barker had owned his own Beagles and was the first man to hunt a pack in South Canterbury. Mr Hamlyn, in association with Mr Godley, had imported hounds from England which were the nucleus of the South Canterbury Hunt. It was due to Messrs Barker and Hamlyn that hunting was started in the district.
