BOBBY CALF POOLS
REVISED REGULATIONS By lei per aph —Pres.* Assnrmlion WELLINGTON, February 22. The Minister of Marketing, the Hon. W. Nash, announces that revised regulations have been issued governing the general operations of protected bobby calf pools now established throughout the Dominion. “These new regulations.” said the Minister, "are an extension of the original bobby calf marketing regulations introduced early in 1938 which have now been revised in the light of the experience gained in the marketing of calves under the pool system during the last 12 months. They now provide the necessary machinery by which each pool can continue its operations from year to year on a self-governing basis. A total of 58 protected pools were formed during last year, and through the agency of producer-com-mittees more than 350,000 calves were successfully marketed with substantial savings to the producer and a material improvement in handling. The following summarised results of protected pools will be of interest to the fanning community: Non-pool Pool Areas Areas Condemned calves .. 5% 1.98% Cartage costs per calf 1/51 11.9 d Average payment to producers per calf 6/5 7/2 "This means Khat not only have producers in pool areas received an increased payment for their calves but in addition wasteful overlapping in cartage with consequent wear and tear on country roads has been eliminated, and calves have received far more humane treatment in every way. At present the pool principle is undoubtedly one of the main factors safeguarding our valuable export trade of boneless veal to the United Kingdom, and I am hopeful that many more pools will be formed during the coming season.”
