WORLD MENACED BY ANARCHY
WARNING BY FRENCH STATESMAN Fate of Civilisation in Balance Mr H. G. Wells’s Conclusions Germany’s Reaction to Munich United Press Association—By E'ectrlc Telegraph—Copyright (Received January 13, 8.40 p.m.) PARIS, January 13. M. Herrlot. in a remarkable inaugural speech, after his election as President of the Chamber of Deputies, warned France that civilisation is threatened by a growing anarchy all over the world. “Our age,” he said, “has shown a return to the cruellest periods of the past. Political and religious liberty is besieged and persecution is rife.” M. Herriot thanked the Pope and President Roosevelt for making a stand against violence. He said that there were no Frenchman who did not desire peace, but a free people could not allow their frontier to be a subject of bargaining. France hoped for better relations with Germany, after the recognition of her frontiers. HUMANITY IN DANGER OF SELF-DE STRUCTION NOTED AUTHOR’S WARNING United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright CANBERRA, January 12. Mr H. G. Wells, the noted author, addressing the Science Congress, declared that unless humanity made a mighty effort for adjustment, it could not escape either self-destruction as a species, or a modification into a more wary, combative, malignant type—tough and hard-hearted enough to maintain itself for a longer or shorter age on a war-devastated planet. “Either we set ourselves to learn, and organise our adaptation, or the genus homo will culminate in an exterminating conqueror, living in caverns and fortifications, with no arts but the arts of war, and a collection of murderous official secrets in the place of science.” “RIGHTS WON WITHOUT WAR” GERMANY’S REFERENCE TO MUNICH REPLY TO PAPAL MESSAGE United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright BERLIN. January 11 Herr Hitler, acknowledging New Year greetings from the Papal Nuncio, who specially referred to the Munich agreement, declared: “I, also am strongly impressed with the Munich agreement. Germany last year brought into effect her absolute rights without war, a result to which the wise judgment of the Powers at Munich contributed. I am of the opinion that that event justifies hope for a future common friendship, and that European statesmen may preserve a peace throughout Europe which gives the fullest justice to the legitimate interests of the nations.”
