SYDNEY “SIX”
Will Opperman Ride?
The management of Sydney Sports Arena hopes to finalise arrangements for the appearance of Hubert Opperman in the Christmas six-day race, to be staged on the indoor board track at Sports Arena. Opperman is noted as a long distance rider, as well as for his experience in six-day races, on the Continent and in Australia. Last year he was teamed with Len Rogers for the Coronation six-day race at Wembley Empire Stadium, London, against the crack sixday teams of the world. Both riders performed with credit, only to have bad luck overtake Rogers on the fifth day, when, through a bad fall, he had to retire, which meant that Opperman had to try to continue on his own. Applications from riders and trade houses are coming in from all parts of Australia and New Zealand. Arrangements have now been finalised with the crack 'lrish-Australian team of Tom Fitzgerald and Jack Cremin, of Timaru to compete in the Christmas Six. Both riders are brilliant team race men, and have several fine performances to their credit on the Exhibition track. The six-day race is limited to 14 teams, and will start on Christmas night at 12.5, and finish at 11.0 on Saturday night, New Year’s Eve, giving 143 hours of riding, which is standard all over the world. It will be of interest to compare the mileage of the Sydney event with those abroad.
