CHILDREN OF STARS IN FILM WORK

VARIED FORTUNES Often handicapped by strong parental objections, sons and daughters of famous motion picture stars are striving for their place in the cinematic sun. Countless objections advanced by parents to their children are to discourage them from trying any sort of a career in the film capital, and others are suggested in a spirit of co-operation and helpfulness. And no one should know the pitfalls and hardships on the road to Hollywood fame better than those who have trod this difficult and hazardous way. “It’s too hard a climb. Rewards are not worth all the suffering and hardships. The odds are too great against success. Competition is too keen. Final attainment of success on the screen means loss of happiness." In spite of these objections, sons and daughters of famous parents turn to the film world for their future. Brothers and sisters, too, os famous folk also are seeking their mark in the celluloid capital. John Rogers, son of Charles R. Rogers, a noted film producer, is starting out as an assistant director. At present he is working under Gregory Ratoff at 20th Century-Fox on the set of “The Girl From Brooklyn.” Jay Bernie, son of the noted orchestra leader-screen player, Ben Bernie, also is an assistant director on the same picture. Eric von Stroheim, son of the wellknown screen producer-actor-director, is starting in at the bottom to fight his way up the cinematic ladder of fame. He has a job as an office boy at 20th Century-Fox. The son of Hedda Hopper, actresscolumnist, Jerry, is gaining recognition as a film juvenile. Jack Temple, brother of the famous box-office champion, Shirley Temple, .is an assistant screen director. Over strong family objections, Lon Chaney, jun., has turned to acting and with success. Avoiding the camera, Alberto Valentino, brother of the late famed Rudolph Valentino, nevertheless chose screen work as his career. He is a very successful accountant.
