NORMAL IN TEN DAYS

Borough Water Supply

Care In Use Necessary Little hope of the borough water supply returning to normal before at least 10 days have passed can be held by Timaru citizens according to a statement made by Mr T. Fox, borough engineer, to a “Timaru Herald” reporter yesterday. “They can hope for the return to good water In the time mentioned only if they exercise the greatest care in the use of water. The matter rests entirely with the citizens themselves,” said M*r Fox. There was very little water in the smaller res rvoir that La. a capacity of 8,000,000 gallons and the larger reservoir, with a capacity of 14,000.000 gallons, is empty so that the position was still as serious as ever. If the citizens exercised the greatest care in the use of water during the next 10 days there should th.’n be a quantity in the smaller reservoir that would serve as a reserve supply and the water, which by then should be clear, could be run into the larger one until it could be drawn on for the town supply, with natural? a considerable improvement in the quality. However, when that improvement could be expected rested principally with the citizens themselves.

The mainstay of the supply was the 14.000,000 gallon reservoir and until it contained enough water it was necessary to depend on the 8.000.000 gallon which was by no means full. With fine weather and care that should b-» effevted in about 10 days, but no more rapid improvement could be anticipated. The damage to the race •»- Saturday Lad been cleared by Monday, although little effect was noticeable n the clarity of the water. The heavy rain on Tuesday had brought more earth down into the race but no slips of consequence occurred. However the clearing process had been retarded. Questioned about the progress of the > ork on the new pipe line in place of the water race, Mr Fox said the factory fo the pipes was progressing. The building was up. and the machinery was being installed so that possibly pipes would be produced early in the New Year. Laying of the pipes and the commencement of the dam at Cannington Gorge would also be proceeded with as early as possible in the New Year. ( _____
