. DECORATIONS FOR NAVY JAPANESE BOMBINGS AT WUHU British Official Wireless RUGBY, December 2. Decorations conferred on officers and ratings of the Royal Navy for gallantry and resource at the time of |he bombing attack by Japanese aeroplanes on British shipping at Wuhu last December are gazetted. The recipients include Captain G. E. M. O’Donnell, lately Chief Staff Officer to the Rear-Admiral of the Yangtse Flotilla, and Lieutenant-Commander L. D. Barlow, commander of H.M.S. Ladybird, who received the D.S.O. Captain O’Donnell was on board the Ladybird and, though painfully wounded in the right hand, placed himself under the orders of the Commanding Officer when the helmsman was hit, and took the wheel himself. Shortly afterwards he landed among the hostile soldiery to protest. Lieu-tenant-Commander Barlow, who was slightly wounded, acted with promptitude and decision in handling his ship ably and fearlessly. In addition, Lieutenant-Commander J. C. M. Ashby, receives the 0.8. E. J. W. M. Hurst, an Admiralty pilot, was given the Distinguished Service Cross, and Yueng Chang Kaig, an officers steward, the Distinguished Service Medal. Hurst, by his fearless handling of the tug Changyung, in which he was assisted by Yueng, made possible the rescue of the crew of the s.s. Luckwo. Ratings who receive the 0.8. E. medal for meritorious service are Chief Engineroom Artificer Brook and Petty Officer Hawkins, both of the Ladybird. It is understood that Rear-Admiral R. V. Holt, who went to the assistance of the Panay, has been mentioned in despatches.
