TEMUKA FARMERS SUPPORT APPEAL

Licensing Authority’s Decision Value of Road Transport Protesting against the decision of the No. 3 Licensing Authority, Mr T. H. Langford, to cancel the operating license of Humphris’ Motors, the Temuka branch of the Farmers’ Union at its monthly meeting on Friday night decided to ally itself with the Temuka Progress League in its support of the appeal which Mr Humphris is making to the Minister of Transport, Hon. R. Semple. The value of the service to farmers was emphasised, and doubts were expressed whether the State could run a service as efficient and convenient. Mr A. Johnson presided at the meeting. Mr F. Smith said that when Mr Langford was at Winchester he had stated that Humphris was the finest road service in the South Island. It was a great convenience to fanners and if it were stopped they would in many cases suffer hardship. Public eeting Suggested The question had been discussed at the Provincial Executive meeting, Mr Johnson said, and a committee of members from the Pleasant Point, Geraldine and Temuka branches had been set up to collect evidence to place before a public protest meeting which was to be held in Temuka. It had been intended to invite Mr Langford to the meeting, but he had received a letter from the Provincial secretary enclosing a copy of a letter from the secretary of the No. 3 Transport area which stated that the appeal would be placed before the Minister of Transport and that Mr Langford would therefore be unable to make any comment on the case until the appeal was heard. Mr A. B. Struthers, the provincial executive advised that the best the branch could do would be to collect evidence of the value of the service to the farmers. •’The service has been particularly valuable to Geraldine where there is no rail head," said Mr Johnson. “There is no doubt that farmers are getting the benefit of it.” He gave Instances where farmers had made consitierable savings by using the road service in preference to rail for the transport of goods. “Almost an Institution” Mr L. V. Talbot said the service was of great value to farmers on the Downs. If it were suspended it would cause great inconvenience. “The Humphris service has almost became an institution,” he said. There had been a suggestion that the railways could carry the service on, continued Mr Talbot, but he did not think that they could do so as efficiently or conveniently. After further discussion Mr Sonth moved that the branch enter an emphatic protest against the cancellation of the licence. This was seconded by Mr Talbot and carried. Grant to Technical Classes It was decided to grant £2/2<- to the Temuka Technical Classes Association. Mr Johnson, reporting’on the No. 3 group conference in Christchurch, said the question of hospital rating whicn was discussed at the last monthly meeting of the branch had been brought up. There were four separate remits, but these had been combined into one which recommended that hospital rating should be abolished when the health scheme was brought into operation.
