WRESTLING

A LIVELY CONTEST By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND. December 4. The professional wrestlers, Lofty Blomfield, of Auckland, and Brother Jonathan, of America, drew a crowd of 10,000 persons to Carlaw Park on Saturday night when they met in an oyen-air contest. Blomfield won by two falls to one. The first fall was a penalty one to Blomfield in the fourth round when his opponent persisted in the use of his knee after being repeatedly warned for such offence. Jonathan remonstrated with the referee and gave full vent to his feelings when the gong sounded for the opening of the fifth round. He attacked the New Zealander viciously, holding him by the hair of his head with his left hand while he delivered heavy blows to the jaw with his right. Blomfield was felled and then lifted bodily for a slam to be an easy victim for a body press. The deciding fall came in the seventh round when Blomfield applied his octopus clamp. Jonathan resisted the hold for about three minutes, but finally submitted. He had to be assitsed to his corner and later limped from the ring supported by his two seconds.

The contest was lively throughout, the referee, Mr J. McLean, being kept very alert in checking illegalities on the part of both men, Jonathan for using his knee and for hitting with the clenched fist and Blomfield :'or pulling the visitor’s whiskers and ears.
