METHODS MUST BE COUNTERED

German Trade Policy

Attacked l " Economic War Not Wanted Unsettling Conditions United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received December 3, 12.50 a.m.) LONDON, December 2. ‘‘The Daily Telegraph’* interviewed Mr R. S. Hudson, secretary of the Department of Oversea trade who said that British industry will be organised if necessary to fight German trade methods not only in South-Eastern Europe but markets throughout the world. The Government had no intention of copying Germany’s methods but on the contrary Britain would continue to conduct her trade and commercial relations along orthodox and traditional financial lines, but new methods would be introduced as new situations arose. The exact form of these methods was being considered by the Government. Mr Hudson emphasised that Britain did not want a trade war with Germany but if no other way was left Britain would not shirk such a war. The Government desired a trade agreement with Germany in which other nations could join, but until such an agreement was reached and so long as Germany maintained her present trading methods, by which she secured a stranglehold over various countries at the cost of her own people, ‘‘we shall be forced to step down to the arena to meet her at her own game. Her methods are destroying trade and unsettling conditions throughout the world. They must be countered.”
