FAT LAMBS
Opening Prices Comparison With Last Season The freezing works in Fouth Canterbury will open for the season on Wednesday next, but it is anticipated that the early killings will not be so heavy as last year. It will be remembered that November and the early part of December last year were fairly dry, and a good many farmers sent their lambs north before the works in this district opened. The weather this year has again been unfavourable for fattening, and as a result the number of lambs coming forward on Wednesday will probably fall below the average figures.
A representative of “The Timaru Herald” was yesterday informed that the opening prices for the season would be: Undei 361 b, 8d; 37 to 421 b, 7!d; over 421 b and seconds. 75d.
Comparing these prices with those ruling last season, it will be found that they are about a half-penny lower. As mentioned earlier, the North Canterbury works opened on November 22 last year, at which tin" the price was 93d for primes and 83d for seconds. A week later 9d was paid for under 36’s, 83d for 37’s to 42’s and B*d for overs and seconds.
The prices for killings on December 7, which corresponds with the opening of the Couth Canterbury works next Wednesday, were B*d, 83d and Bd. A week later they fell to Bd, 73d and 7id, which are identical with the opening prices this season.
