WEATHER SOUTH CANTERBURY FORECAST
CHANGEABLE Special to " The Timaru Herald.'' WELLINGTON, December 2. Winds: Turning to moderate to strong west to south-west. Weather: Changeable and some showers probable; temperatures cooler. DOMINION FORECAST General Situation A deep westerly depression with a considerable northward extension is now crossing the southern portion of the South Island. Pressure is rising over South-Eastern Australia. Forecast Winds: Northerlies prevailing at first over most of the country and reaching gale force in parts of the middle portion of the Dominion; a change to west or south-west advancing, however, from the south during the next 24 hours. Seas (N.Z. waters: Rough about Cook Strait, elsewhere slight to moderate, but rising generally on the West Coast and in the far south. Eastern Tasman Sea: Strong west to south-west winds and rough seas. Weather: Cloudy to overcast with rain in most districts and some heavy falls over the South Island; temperatures warm, but becoming cooler tomorrow. TIMARU RECORDS Sun rose at Timaru to-day 4.48 am.; sets 7.45 p.m. High water at Timaru at 11.37 a.m. and 12.3 p.m. to-day. HOT NOR’-WESTRY DAY A light gusty nor’-wester made yesterday uncomfortably warm. Late last night the wind turned to the south and rain appeared probable. Readings at Timaru Park yesterday were:— Barometer —29.41. Max. temp.—72. Min. temp, on grass—49. Wind—N.N.W.3. Rainfall—Nil. Rainfall to date this year—34.sBins. Rainfall to date last year—l7.Blins. Sunshine—4.6hrs. Sunshine to date this year—lsB6.7hrs Sunshine to date last year—l69s.Bhrs
IN OTHER CENTRES Christchurch: Yesterday was overcast but warm, with a northerly breeze. Rain threatened in the late morning, but only a few drops fell. The maximum temperature was 70.2 degrees. The barometer recorded 29.70 inches at 5 p.m. and was falling. Temuka: Yesterday was overcast in the morning but cleared later in the day. There was a north-easterly wind blowing. The maximum temperature was 77 degrees and the minimum 52. The glass was falling last evening. Waimate (for the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. yesterday): Thermometer, maximum, 61.5; minimum, 54.0; bright sunshine, nil; wind gauge, miles run in last 24 hours, 25. Yesterday was fine and warm. Dunedin: Yesterday morning was fine and mild, but there was a warm breeze from the north in the afternoon and the temperature reached a maximum of 77 degrees. The sky was overcast till the late afternoon and conditions were warm in the evening. The barometer fell sharply to 29.45 Inches and then began to rise.
