MOTOR-CYCLE CLUB

TWENTY-FOUR HOUR TRIAL The South Canterbury Motor-Cycle j Club held its annual 24-hour trial last week-end. This is one of the major events sponsored by the Club and it is conducted to show that the motor cycle is an economical, safe and reliable means of transport. The distance travelled by the competitors was 440 miles over all classes of roads. Commencing at Timaru, the riders were despatched at minute intervals and travelled from Timaru to Palmerston, to Ranfurly, to Roxburgh, to Dunedin via Milton, and then the home stretch Dunedin to Timaru, via Leith Valley. Various time checks were placed over the course, the riders being required to ride at speeds averaging 25 and 30 miles an hour, and forfeited points for being early or late at controls and secret checks. Other means of testing riding ability, such as stopping and re-starting tests, water splashes and observed sections were also incorporated. Considering the varied nature of the trial the percentage of points lost by competitors was comparatively small. The trial was ably controlled by Messrs N. Gibb. K. Vincent and T. Stoddart who were assisted by a willing body of officials who also traversed the whole course. The following are the awards and placings: — R. Davey (8.5. A. 28i points lost—l. A.
