ACHILLES DEPARTS
SCENES AT DEVONPORT By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, December 2. Flying the paying-off pennant, the gift of the Mayor of Auckland, Sir Ernest Davis, the warship Achilles sailed from Devonport naval base at 10.30 a.m. for England, where she will refit, and return to New Zealand in May next. A large crowd assembled near her berth, and while the band on the quarterdeck played rollicking naval airs appropriate to the occasion, final good-byes were said between the men and thei rwves, chldren and sweethearts. Then, “all aboard,” and, ?s the vessel drew away, there was a strange silence, followed by mighty cheers from the quayside and the vessel. A bevy of small craft escorted the warship down the harbour. Her route wll be Suva-Tahiti-Panama-Jamaica-England. Commodore I .G. Glennis is in command.
