PRICE OF COAL

INCREASE MADE BY SOME COLLIERIES A general rise in the price of coal has been anticipated in some quarters for some time and the first move in this direction was recorded in Timaru on Thursday, when the price of Kaitangata coal was advanced 3d a bag. It is not known when there is likely to be a general increase in coal prices, but it is understood that the matter will be considered shortly by South Canterbury coal merchants. A general rise in the retail price of coal occurred at Dunedin this week, the increase being 3d a bag or 9d a quarter ton, no alteration being made in halfton and ton lots with the exception of Kaitangata and Kai Point coals, on which an increase of 2/- a ton, ex mine, has been made, and Wangaloa, which has been raised by 1/6 a ton, ex mine. This is the first time the price of coal has risen since June 1, 1937 and the present action has been taken in consequence of a rise of 7/6 a week to yard workers, which took effect on January 1, 1938, and a rise of 5/- a week to drivers from October 31.
