BOWLING

Bristol Cup Interesting Games (By “Toucher.”) The first round of the Bristol Cup bowling began in earnest last Saturday. There was really no surprises, and the next round, which will be played on November 26, should be very interesting. Timaru had no trouble in disposing of Waimate, who are not so strong as usual this season. Waimate won only tv/o games, and strangely enough these were against Timaru’s strongest rinks. Englefield did very well to beat Healy’s rink, and that old veteran Geo. Collett, also had a good win over Kebby. Patchett and R. S. Home had two easy wins. Keen had a close game all the way against T. Parry. The last head was very interesting. The scores were 21 all and when the skips went back it was a measure for shot. Keen, with his second bowl, rested Waimate’s shot and lay two, Parry just missing with his last bowl. The other games were fairly even. Kia Toa’s Good Win Kia Toa did well to beat Temuka on their own green by 25 points, which was just the difference in the game between Hawkey and Shillito. The other games were very close. As a rule in an eight rink game there is always one rink which goes down rather badly, and this has a decided effect on the total. West End won rather easily against Ashbury, who were hard put to it to field a team at all. They were unlucky to be without Darroch and Spring, two of their regular skips, but even with a full team I think West End over eight rinks would have been too strong for them. Maclaren and Sampson had two goods wins for West End, and Young (Ashbury) gave Gunn a bit of trouble during the afternoon. Highfield Unlucky Highfield were rather unlucky having to forfeit their game to the Park and then winning the friendly match afterwards. They had to play two i substitutes which, of course, disqualified them so far as the Bristol Cup was concerned. However, we conI gratulate them on their win, and trust next year they will be able to field a full team. In the next round Timaru will play Kia Toa and West End will play Park. Both games should be very interesting. New Zealand Tournament The New Zealand Bowling Association’s tournament will be held at Auckland this year from January 9 onwards, and teams are already being made up for this annual event. There is always a large entry when the tournament is held in Auckland, and this year should be no exception to the rule.

Late Starting It is still difficult to get games started to time on Saturdays, as there are always some stragglers who stroll on to the green at the old starting time. There should be no difficulty nowadays in getting a start at 2 o’clock in town. Bowl Stamp All bowlers whose bowls do not bear the 1932 or subsequent stamps should have the mtested as soon as possible, as the Centre intend to enforce that rule next month. New Rules The new rules of the N.Z.B.A. have come to hand and any player can have a copy by applying to the secretary of the Centre. As there are quite a few changes, it is only right that players should make themselves conversant with the latest copy.
