OAKS STAKES TO PEERLESS

DEFAULTER pays again

NORTH ISLAND SUCCESSES Special to “ The Timaru Herald." CHRISTCHURCH, November 9. The weather was overcast and threatening when the Canterbury Jockey Club’s spring meeting was resumed at Riccarton to-day. A heavy shower fell just before the Jockey Club Handicap, and subsequently the clouds lifted. The rain was not sufficient to do any material harm to the track. The attendance was sparse at the outset, but improved considerably during the afternoon. The Oaks witnessed the downfall of the favourite Disdain, all the places being filled by North Island fillies, with Peerless and Homily outclassing the rest of the field. Trench Fight repeated his win of two years ago in the Jockey Club Handicap, in which another pronounced favourite, The Bigot, was beaten out of a place. Defaulter, ridden by L. J. Ellis, led all the way to canter home four lengths ahead of Willie Win in the Canterbury Cup, and set at rest all doubts concerning his class.

RACING REVIEWED Narrow Victory For the Port Cooper Hurdles, backers fancied Sunee 924-828, Redolent-Lin-guist 638-755, and Dividend 459-639. Linguist, Dividend and Metal Bird jumped the first hurdle together and raced to the second in line, but Linguist lost ground at the obstacle. Turning into the back Dividend and Metal Bird were in command from Round Score, Redolent and Mount Vai, but Round Score fell on the flat and a bad jump sent Mount Vai back. Racing round the top Dividend was out clear of Sunee, Metal Bird and Redolent, with Silver Sight handy. Dividend led Sunee, Redolent, Silver Sight and Glenvane to the straight, but at the final obstacle Silver Sight had joined Dividend and Red Sun in the front row. Once over the obstacle Silver Sight drew away and looked like winning easily, but his big weight pulled him up and Dividend came again to beat him by a head. Four lengths away came Sunee and Glenvane, with half a head between them, followed by Superex and Redolent. Favourite Beaten Daniel Defoe 2013-1399 was backed down to a short price for the Spring Nursery, with Baran 661-893 in much better demand than any of the others. Dark Flight (from the outside), Daniel Defoe and Mondello were the smartest beginners, and they were still clear at the entrance to the main course. A bit further on Daniel Defoe took sole charge, but over the last furlong Baran put in a strong run and defeated the favourite by two lengths. Gold Salute, who was a length away, got up to beat Dark Flight by half a length for third money. The next to finish were Moorsotls, Prudent Prince and Blissful Lady. Good Passage Bolts The withdrawal of Avenal, Chirp and Romarin did not affect the quality of the field for the New Zealand Oaks, which afforded more than its usual scope for speculation. Homily was very fretful before the start, but Good Passage Was nearly as bad, and when mounted broke through the tapes. Led back by her rider, she got loose, and cantered homewards, her backers losing their money without a run. Homily was first to move, but Kilrobe soon took up the running from Disdain, Homily and Russian Ballet. Kilrobe turned into the back straight three lengths ahead of Disdain, who was two lengths in advance of Homily and Russian Ballet. Half-way round the top curve Kilrcoe was only a length to the good of Disdain, with Homily, Russian Ballet and Lady Rosette running in line a length further back. Turning for home the leaders were Kilrobe, Disdain, Homily and Russian Ballet, but once in line for the winning post Peerless moved up fast, and with two furlongs to go she was going ahead with Homily hard ridden in pursuit. Peerless had no difficulty in winning by a length from Homily, who beat Russian Ballet by about eight lengths. The favourite, who petered out over the last couple of furlongs, was five or six lengths further back, followed by Kilrobe. Disdain’s performance was a disappointing one, and it appeared that she had been knocked out by her struggle to stall off Beaupartir in the Spring Plate. Jockey Club Handicap Only six runners were forthcoming for the Jockey Club Handicap, and The Bigot 1965-1165 was made a good deal better favourite than Trench Fight. AL began well except Malagigl, and at the end of a furlong Ponty, The Bigot and Nightcalm were racing in line clear of Dictate. Round the top Ponty was in command from The Bigot, who was followed by Nightcalm, Dictate and Trench Fight. Near the half-mile post Dictate fell and Trench Fight and Nightcalm lost a little ground. At the entrance to the straight The Bigot took the lead from Ponty, with Trench Fight moving up on the outside. Trench Fight was in front a furlong from the post, but Nightcalm stuck to him and the topweight got home only by a head. Malaglgi was third, a length and a half away, with The? Bigot beaten into fourth place. A thundershower fell before the race, and horses and riders sheltered in the scraping sheds until they were called up to the barrier. Backed To Short Price Defaulter 1944-1015 was backed down to a short price in the Canterbury Cup, and enhanced his reputation by scoring an effortless victory. Defaulter led off from Wild Chase and Siegmund, Arctic Star conceding a bit of ground. At the nine furlongs the colt was three lengths clear of Wild Chase and Willie Win, and at the mile he had increased his advantage to four lengths. Half-way across the top Siegmund dashed into second place less than two lengths behind Defaulter, with Wild Chase and Willie Win handy. Hard ridden, Wild Chase and Willie Win closed on Defaulter on reaching the straight, but the three-year-old bounded away again

and won by four lengths from Willie Win, who was two lengths in advance of Wild Chase. Arctic. King was two lengths further back. The speed was not excessive for the first mile, but Defaulter ran the last half in 48 3-ssec. Form Horse Wins The sun was shining wb"n the horses paraded for the Ashley Handicap, for which Great Flight 990-1074 and Gay Parade 960-1028 were preferred to a form horse, Synthetic 865-955. Many of the big field lost their chances in the initial stages. Teak, Dissemble, Lady Chat and Financiere were among the quick beginners, and Teak and Dissemble were first on to the main course. Two furlongs from home Teak, Dissemble, Baldoon, Asset and' Garonne were prominent, with Synthetic coming through. Synthetic caught the leaders with a furlong to go and won by a length from Asset, with Great Flight three lengths away catching Teak on the post. Gay Parade, Queen Linda, Sigurd, Rebellion and Attractive Lady were next. A Good Field There were seventeen runners for the Otaio Plate, the longest hack race at the meeting, but most of the money was invested on Auctor 1271-1244, Rustem 1004-1024, Night Dress 841-886, and Passaform 700-911. Comus was the prime offender in delaying the start, but a perfect despatch was made. Nereus and Rustem jumped first, but Night Dress and Auctor soon ran to the front from Hlnerawe, Night Dress, Master Dingle, Prime Quality, Passaform, Rustem, all bunched, the last two being Wagner and Happy Night. Auctor led to the straight from Master Dingle, Night Dress, Hinerawe, Rustem, Passaform and High Quality, but two furlongs from home the favourite was challenged by Rustem, who wore him down to beat him by a length. Passaform was about three lengths away, two lengths ahead of Manetho and Master Dingle, with Recolection at the head of the others. Concluding Event The sky had clouded again and light rain was falling when the Avon Handicap was run. Triune, Royal Star 11, Racecall, Brunhild, and Rakahanga all were well backed. Triune, who gave a lot of trouble on the outside, sacrificed his chance by beginning badly. Ballad, Racocall, Roseman and Brunhild could be picked up in the early stages, but when they reached the main course Brunhild, Racecall and Rakahanga appeared to be in front. Halfway up the straight Racecall was just heading Brunhild, and a furlong from home he appeared a likely winner, but Rakahanga came through on the inside and won by a neck. Royal Star II finished strongly a length away and cut Brunhild out of third money. Golden Chest being fifth. Results.— PORT COOPER HURDLES, Of £300; IS miles 3/3—E.
