Ihaia Hutana, one of the bestknown of the Maori chiefs of early days, who had lived most of his life in the Maori settlement at Waipawa. died this morning at the age of 96. Connected by birth with most of the Maori tribes of Hawke’s Bay and the East Coast, he was, in the earlier days, the prime mover in the Katahitanga. a movement which had as its objective the federation of all the Maori tribes. The late Chief was a man of deep knowledge of Maori affairs, and was considered one of the most reliable historians of the race.
