MODERN KNITTING CRAFT

A WHITE PLAY SUIT WITH RAINBOW STRIPES

Measurements The model is in size 36in. bust. 8 stitches more, or less, on each side will give a larger or a smaller size. Materials 54 ounces of white wool, 2 ounces of black wool, and 2 ounces of green wool. A pair of No. 11 knitting needles. The Knitting Pattern The Shorts are knitted in stocking stitch. The Top is knitted in a rib pattern as follows: —Ist row: 1 plain, 1 purl, repeat to the end of the row. 2nd row: plain. These two rows are knitted alternately.

INSTRUCTIONS Shorts, left leg:— The paper pattern shows one leg. It is knitted in such a maimer that there are no seams over the hips. Begin at the bottom, and cast on enough stitches for the 32in. width. Knit Sin. in ribbing (see above). Continue with the white wool in stocking stitch (in the finished shorts the purl side of the knitting will be outside)). Knit 41n. Cast off 12 stitches on each side, and afterwards 4 lots of 3 stitches, and 2 lots of 2 stitches, and lastly cast oft 1 stitch at the beginning of each row. When the work measures 13in divide it into 2 parts for the shaping at the hips, and cast off 1 stitch every 3rd row here. When there are only 54 stitches left on the needles (and these should measure 7in.) leave that half of the knitting, and continue with the other which is knitted in the same way. The two parts are now knitted together with a rib of 2 plain, and 2 purl. Continue the ribbing for Ilin. The right leg is knitted in exactly the same manner. The Belt. Cast on sufficient stitches for the waist measurement, and knit

4in. of stocking stitch. Cast off enough stitches on each side to leave only 4in. width of knitted fabric. Continue knitting, casting off two stitches on each side in every other row until there are only 5 stitches left. Cast these off in one lot. Cut out a belt in linen in exactly these measurements, but Sin. shorter, and Sin. less in width. Sew the knitted belt on this, turning in the edges.l Line with silk. The Pockets. Cast on stitches sufficient for the 4in. width of these in the white wool, and knit purl. When the work measures 6in. cast off 1 stitch on each side in every row until there are only 3 stitches left. Cast off.

Crochet the pockets in position with 3 rows of double crochet in the black wool.

To Make Up. Press all the parts under a slightly damp cloth. Sew the legs together 4in. up. Lay the legs together and sew the front and back seams of the shorts. Sew the belt to the front, and put hooks and eyes on the back. On each pocket sew a ring of cork or similar material, using the white wool.

The Top. Cut a pattern in the necessary size following the diagram. It shows one half of the front top. The top is knitted in two parts. Right Front. Begin at point “A”. Cast on 3 stitches using the white wool,

and knit 6in. in the ribbed pattern. Knit so that the left side under the arm is steadily Increased by 1 stitch, and the right side by 2 stitches in every other row. When the left side measures 6in. do not increase further there, but the right side should continue to increase until the middle of the waist is reached, but when this point is reached continue without increasing until the piece measures 13in. measured from the middle of the bottom. It is now necessary to begin to decrease 1 stitch in each row until the width of the work is only Ilin. This narrow strip is continued for 43in. for the neck band. Cast off. The stripes are knitted in the following order. The first 6in. with the white wool, 8 rows of green, 8 rows of white, 4 rows of black, 4 rows of green, 12 rows of white, 24 rows of black, 26 rows of green, 12 rows of white, 4 rows tf black, 4 rows of green, and the rest white. The Left Front is knitted exactly as the right front only in the opposite order. The Back. The back is knitted in 2 pieces, and in the same manner as the two front parts. The two parts of

the back together measure 6in. x 161 in. Cast on 3 stitches, and increase by the same amount of stitches as the front. When the work measures 6in., cast off 2 st. in each row. On the other side which runs along the bottom of the back increase steadily by 2 stitches in each row until the middle is reached. Continue without increasing until there are no stitches left. The colours are knitted in the same manner as the front. To Make Up. The two front, and two back pieces are sewn together in the middle. Take up the stitches at the bottom of the front and knit a ribbing of 2in. in 2 plain and 2 purl. Knit

a similar rib on the back. Now sew the top together at the sides. Hem narrowly along the back and neck. Press all seams under a slightly damp cloth.
