CONSERVATION OF FORESTS AND NATIVE BIRDS

In the November issue of Forest and Bird, the official organ of the Forest and Bird Protection Society of New Zealand, the need is stressed again for an active national policy in forest and bird conservation: "Fifteen years ago the Forest and Bird Protection Society pointed out the failure in New Zealand of wild-life administration, especially in the enforcement of various Acts relating to it. Today we repeat the accusation Action longoverdue, is still delayed. The poaching of native birds still continues, game and fish stocks go on lessening, the erosion and floods will continue to exact their devastating toll, until a proper policy is formulated and put into operation. It would appear that the Forest and Bird Protection Society is like a voice crying in the wilderness, but that is scarcely so. The Minister of Public Works has confessed that he sees national danger in the continued depletion’of the natural plant covering the watershed lands and the Minister of Internal Affairs is a confessed conservator of native plant life and a lover of native fauna. Nevertheless, any society that champions forest and bird conservation is entitled to the support of all who love the fair land of New Zealand.
