LICENSED HOTELS

OPPOSITION TO INCREASE Bv Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, November 4 Strong opposition to any increase in the number of licensed hotels in the Dominion was expressed by the DeputyMayor, Mr J. S. Barnett, at the annual conference of the South Island Travel Association this morning. A remit from the executive council was that the Government should be urged to renew the licensing law of the Dominion in light of its influence on tourist traffic and travel in the Dominion. During the discussion on the annual report Mr Barnett said there was no doubt of the value of tourists to the Dominion, but if it was the intention of the Association to add to the number of licences either in “wet” or “dry” areas, it would be purchasing the traffic at too great a price. The need for increased hotel accommodation had been mentioned by Mr W. A. Ott of Invercargill, particularly in view of the Centennial Exhibition New Year. No decision was reached.
