BRIAR MENACE

MACKENZIE COUNTY COUNCIL TO ACT FAIRLIE, November 4. The growing menace of briar in the Mackenzie County was referred to at to-day’s meeting of the Council by Mr Geo. Murray, who contended that a campaign should be started to stamp out the pest on the roads and in the country reserves. “I have been bringing this thing up for years and how far have I got with it?” said Mr Murray, when members stated that it would be inopportune to attempt to eradicate briar at this time of the year. Mr C. J. Talbot pointed out that the Council was whole-heartedly behind Mr Murray and would support a motion introduced at the proper time. Mr W. Scott drew attention to the menace caused by Californian thistle. Gorse, said the chairman (Mr W. R. Davison) v/as causing considerable trouble dov/n country. “You cannot stop gorse and Californian thistle, but you can stop briar,” said Mr Murray. The Council assured Mr Murray that they would support a motion introduced in March to give notice to those responsible to clear briar from their road frontages, or for the work to oe dene at the ratepayers’ expense, and that the Council take steps to clear briar from their plantations.
