A. AND P. ASSOCIATION

SHOW ENTRIES DOWN Entries to date for the Waimate A. and P. Show are only fair, reported the secretary (Mr A. J. Hoskins) to a meeting of the committee yesterday. The non-entry of two previously prominent exhibitors, he said, would bring down the figures for the sheep section. The cost of transporting the sheep to the grounds was advanced as a reason for farmers being reluctant to enter. Mr H. J. C. Harper: The cost of transport and the small prize money. “It seems to me that there will be only two or three shows in New Zealand the way things are going,” commented the chairman, Mr J. Dempsey.

Present: Messrs J. Dempsey (chairman), J. C. Hay, J. C. Faulkner, J. M. Bruce, H. B. L. Johnstone, M. D. Studholme, A. Medlicott, A. Hayman, H. J. C. Harper, E. C. d’Auvergne, W. B. Wilson, E. B. Harrison, J. Mcßae, T. B. W. Hamilton, F. G. Brown. Mr J. L. Menzies, chairman of the Waimate Scouts’ Committee, who was present at the meeting, offered the services of the Scouts at the show in any capacity which the Association might choose. The services of the boys, he said, were at the disposal of the association at any time. A resolution of sympathy was passed to the relatives of the late Mr A. Stokes and of the late Mr A. Brown. The resignations of Messrs E. Warren, estate late A. Don, W. Thompson and L. Winters were accepted with regret. Messrs R. Austin, W. Carleton, D. C. McDonald, E. Medlicott, J. Tennant, J. L. Trott and J. B. L. Trott were elected new members. Messrs J. C. Hay and T. B. W. Hamilton were appointed to supervise the parking of cars. It was agreed to allocate a Boy Scout to each marshal. GOLF CLUB ANNUAL REPORT “In spite of the serious dislocation to the programme caused by wet weather the season has been fairly successful,” states the annual report of the Waimate Golf Club to be presented at the annual meeting of the club to-day. “Membership has substantially improved on last year, increasing from 55 at the beginning of the year to 61, including 9 country members at the end. The increase in the country membership is gratifying to the committee which hopes that an additional number of country residents will take advantage of the reduced subscriptions and facilities afforded to them and take up the game. “Owing to the set of conditions the number of inter-club competitions played was comparatively small, while in the club competitions the entries were only fair. The results for the year were as follows: —Senior championship, T. A. Wilson; runner-up, R. Deacon; B grade championship, M. Leadbetter; Francis Cup (medal), D. Samways; Dewar Cup (bogey), R. Deacon; four-ball handicap, R. Morgan and L. Bail. “Early in the season, Mr Horton, New Zealand Greens Research Expert submitted his report of proposed improvements. He complimented the club very highly on the state of its fairways and greens and his only suggestion was confined to an extensive bunkering scheme. A very generous subsidy was granted from the Unemployment Fund, and with this assistance the Committee employed five men for 11 weeks in carrying out the bunkering scheme, which is an unqualified success, and has very greatly improved the links. The total cost of the improvements to the club, including share of labour and materials was £55, while the subsidy granted was £204. A very hearty vote of thanks is due to the Department for its generous assistance not only on this scheme but also for | further assistance in coping with the gorse menace which early in the season proved very troublesome. Special thanks must also be tendered to the five employed men employed on the bunkering scheme for the very excellent manner in which they carried out the work allotted to him. Special thanks are also due to the club captain, Mr J. W. Tennant, who supervised the work throughout. Finances Improve “Owing to the increased subscription for the current year the financial position has improved, and after allowing for full depreciation on buildings and plant of £32/8/- and extra expenses incurred in connection with the bunkering scheme, etc., the balance of assets over liabilities shows a decrease on last year of only £3/12/11, the respective figures being £545/15/5 and £542/2/6. In arriving at these figures no allowance has been made for the value to the club of the bunkering, etc., carried out. Ordinary revenue for the year totalled £337/18/8 plus £5 for timber sold, while the ordinary expenses were £294/18/8 plus £36/13/4 on account of bunkering costs. Moreover, the outstanding subscriptions at £l5/10/3 are larger than usual. “Recently Mr Bremner who has for a number of years carried out the mowing of the fairways advised the committee that he would be unable to carry on. Your committee considered alternative methods, and finally decided that the most satisfactory and economical would be for it to purchase a tractor and this has now been done. Although this purchase involves a heavy drain on the finances for the next three years, it is anticipated that the present subscriptions will enable the club to meet its total expenditure from year to year. Our thanks are due to Mr Bremner for carrying out the mowing during the past seasons often under considerable difficulties. “In conclusion your committee w: -es to than', the members of the Ladies’ Club for their usual willing assistance; Mr Parry for his services as auditor; the newspapers for publication of golf notes and information; those who made donations, and also those members of the club who assisted in the working bees in respect of the returfing of tees and also the turf cutting in respect to the bunkering scheme.” TENNIS i TEAMS FOR TO-DAY The following team will represent the Waimate Tennis Club in a B grade match against Hunter at Waimate Courts to-day—R.
