Sir Robert Anderson, of Invercargill, has returned from a visit to Australia. Mr George Bliss Lane has been appointed Consul for the United States in Wellington, according to a Gazette notice. Mr P. Liesching, who has been acting-High Commissioner for the United Kingdom in Australia for the past two and a-half years, has returned to England. Mr George Ellwood, who was New Zealand’s premier ’cellist for some years, and taught the ’cello in Wellington with much success, is now known as Gregor Bartonye, and Is musical director of broadcasting in Durban, South Africa. At the meeting of the executive of the South Canterbury Returned Soldiers’ Association held on Tuesday evening the chairman, Mr J. G. Walker, referred to the death of the late Mr J. J. Mason, the meeting passing a motion of sympathy with the relatives. Dr A. M. Begg, Dunedin, who is in London on a year’s leave of absence from the New Zealand Cancer Laboratory, is at present attached to the laboratory of the Imperial Research Cancer Fund at Mill Hill, where he worked for some time before returning to New Zealand in 1930. Captain C. C. Waters has left Auckland for Vancouver en route to Scotland to take command of one of the Union Company’s new cargo vessels, the motorship Karitane, which will be completed in January by Messrs Henry Robb, Limited, at Leith. Her chief officer will be Mr A. J. McKenzie and the chief engineer Mr R. W. Feenen.
