“There is no foundation whatever for the stupid rumours which were circulated recently about lack of confidence in the Post Office Savings Bank business,” said Mr H. Miller, chief postmaster at Invercargill, at the annual reunion of the Southland section of the Post and Telegraph Employees’ Association. “There has been a remarkable Increase in the business of this department,” Mr Miller said. “It will probably surprise you to know that the amount to the credit of depositors to-day is £63,000.000—an increase of £5,000,000 over the deposits of last year. Also approximately 40,000 new accounts were opened during the year. These figures should be sufficient answer to people who talk of lack of confidence in the Savings Bank Department. Each member of the Post Office staff is a representative of the Post and Telegraph Department, and makes contact with many people, and in giving you the figures I do so hoping that you will be able to supply the answer to cuch rumours.”
