ANGLO-AMERICAN TRADE

FORECAST OF TREATY Reports were circulated in Washington last month that the trade treaties between Great Britain and the United States and Canada and the United States had been virtually completed. Statements in the Press that there had been great dissension and even danger that the negotiations would collapse were vigorously repudiated. The explanation has since been offered that the delay has been caused only by the large number of individual items to be considered. It is certainly true, however, that industrial and agricultural interests in all three countries have taken an extremely active interest in the negotiations and have individually done their utmost to advance their own welfare, says a writer in the “Manchester Guardian.” If the preliminary reports are reliable. Great Britain will accept from the United States at low’ered duties wheat, fresh, dried and canned fruits, meats and numerous special types of food. Items on which there will be no duty are expected to be fresh apples, oranges, grapefruit, pears, melons, pumpkins, lemons, limes, grapes, peaches, plums, apricots, cherries, gooseberries, strawberries and pineapples. Wheat meal and wheat flour may also be permitted to enter Great Britain without duty. Tariffs on dried fruits will be reduced more drastically than those on other products. Details are not yet available as to changes In the tariffs on miscellaneous manufactured goods, cotton cloth, and other items. It is believed, however, that substantial reductions will be made on a long list of such products both by the United States and Great Britain. There will be less change in duties as between the United States and Canada, since many of these have been reduced by agreements previously made and already in effect. It is hoped that the Anglo-American treaty may be accepted so that it can go into effect in November.
