SEA DOWN WATER SUPPLY
Many Do Not Desire It Downlands Scheme Preferred Of 18 people interviewed 14 were desirous of closing the Seadown stock race in favour of the Downlands Water Supply scheme reported the Levels County engineer, Mr A. R. Callander, to the Council yesterday. At the last meeting of the Council a petition was presented by a deputation of settlers who wished to abandon the Seadown scheme, and the Council instructed the engineer to Interview and gain the views of all the people served by the scheme. Yesterday the report was received, and It was decided to discuss the position at a special meeting to be held in about two weeks’ time. An inspection was made of the Seadown water race which ran from the Mill Road into Mr Olliver's farm and then south-east along the Main Point Road to the gravel pit at the County Yard at Washdyke, reported the engineer, Mr A. R. Callander. Consumers who did not sign the petition to close the race were interviewed, and their opinions were as follows. There were 14 in favour of closing the stock race and four against. Two who leased their land, were non-com-mittal being unable to commit their owners either way. The four consumers who desired to retain the stock race, were emphatic in their contention that the stock race supply was economical and necessary to them in addition to the Downlands Supply. Also, one man desired it to be understood that, although he preferred the retention of the stock race, he did not wish to block the desires of the majority of the consumers. In his opinion, said the engineer, nothing should be done as regards the closing of the race until the Downlands Supply was actually operating in the locality. The report was received and the matter was held over for the special meeting.
