ROWING
TIMARU CLUB The following are the results of the Elementary Fours up to date: B. McDonald (s), L. Lyttle, B. Barnes, B. Sterling defeated C. De Clifford (s), J. Hooke, D. Parson, E. Waters in a well-fought race. Sterling got away to an excellent start and gained a lead of half a length which he held to within the mouth of the harbour where De Clifford gained a little but Sterling held on and drew away going down the wharf to win by a length. It was a surprise win. In the semi-finals J. Lennon (s), R. O’Conner, E. Hunter, J. McKinnon won from W. Ramsay (s), P. Campbell, C. Scott, A. Davidson in an exciting race. Ramsay got away to a good start and at the harbour mouth had increased his lead to three-quarters of a length. Coming to the wharf Lennon, sprinting magnificently, decreased the lead to a quarter of a length at the head of the wharf, and in a splendid finish crossed the line six feet to the good. In the other semi-final B. Sterling defeated F. Wright (s), S. Hawkey, M. Ross, L. Pawson by about one and a half lengths. Sterling raced away at the start taking every advantage of a slight mix-up Wright got into. At the mouth Sterling was a length to the good and he held off a challenge inside the mouth to win comfortably. The final will be rowed to-night at 6.30 between Sterling and Lennon, when a good race is anticipated.
