WORK AT RICCARTON

PREPARING FOR CUP MEETING Special to “ The Timaru Herald." CHRISTCHURCH, November 1. After rain overnight, the weather was fine for work at Riccarton this morning. The outside of the course proper was in good order, and there were some smart gallops over sprint courses, with useful miles by a number of Cup candidates. Great Baby and Happy Night opened with six furlongs in Imin 20sec, time that Sparkle equalled. Paper Slipper and Counterblast set the standard for the morning by registering 47 2-ssec for a brilliant half-mile. Paper Slipper was in front, after holding his companion all the way. Benevolent sprinted half a mile nicely in 50sec. Disdain went off fast from the seven furlong post. She ran the first three in 36sec and completed her task in Imin 29sec. Wild Chase was in front of Good Passage after a mile in Imin 45sec, Trench Fight taking Imin 44 2-5 sec by himself. Great Flight beat Happy Memory over half a mile in 49 3-ssec. Sovereign Lady reeled off a mile in Imin 44 3-ssec, Scuffle taking Imin 47 3-ssec. Nightcalm ran five furlongs well In Imin 2sec, while The Bigot did six comfortably in Imin 17 2-ssec. Rakahanga was a neck in front of Lady Chat over half a mile in 48 2-ssec, a smart effort. Kinnoull beat Baldoon over half a mile in 50sec. Rousseau, after being outpaced for the first half, stayed on to beat Kilrobe and Gillie over a mile in Imin 43 2-5 sec.

Golden Chest and Bouillon took Imin 6sec for five furlongs. Nora Gregor, Baran and Lord Midas sprinted smartly down the straight from the half-mile post. Triune and Sly Fox took Imin 19sec for six furlongs. Master Hotspur easily beat My Abbey over half a mile in 49sec. Romarin and Tantivy were well clear of Dranoel over five furlongs in Imin 4sec.

Four New Zealand Cup candidates, Malagigl, Willie Win, The Buzzer and Padishah, were companions over about nine furlongs. Timed from the mile post, they took 50 4-ssec for the first half, and completed their task in Imin 42sec. Malagigi was in front all the way, and was clear of Willie Win at the finish. The Buzzer, finishing strongly, was a length away, with Padishah several lengths farther back. It was good work, Malagigi pleasing most. Defaulter and Night Dress, after a first half in 52 2-ssec, completed a mile easily in Imin 47ses. Moorsotis and Iceland Spar took 52sec for an easy half-mile. Gay Son stayed on to beat Peter Beckford over half a mile in 49 2-ssec. Rabble ran half a mile in 50 2-ssec, The Duel taking Imin 6 2-ssec for five furlongs. Queen Linda beat Spartan in Imin 4 2-ssec. Argentic was not hurried while doing seven furlongs in Imin 33sec. Avenal sprinted half a mile up the back in 51sec. Mungatoon and Cape Gabo were sent a mile and a quarter. After taking 28sec for the first two furlongs, from a stand, the journey was completed In 2min 11 4-ssec. Mungatoon was in front from the start and though joined by Cape Gabo in the straight, he drew away again over the final furlong. Night Hawk, going at an even pace, took Imin 47 l-ssec for a mile. Dictate took 52sec for an easy half mile, Synthetic following In 52 2-ssec, while Rebellion did five furlongs in Imin 7 2-ssec. Gay Parade ran half a mile in 50sec, finishing well. There was net much between Skyrina and Nigella, after registering 49 3-ssec. Waka led Wagner over a mile in Imin 47sec, Great Bramble and Dropped Catch beating Top Rank in Imin 45 3-ssec. Recollection, brought home by Flame Queen, registered Imin 45sec. Great Swoop and Scold took 50 3-ssec for half a mile. Glenogil and The Sandwichmax were

on terms at the end of six furlongs in Imin 17 4-ssec.

Dividend (A. Leach) and Flashlight (R. Register) led Metal Bird (J. Murfitt) over six hurdles. They went at a solid pace, Dividend giving a very attractive display. Flashlight, though not jumping so fast as his mate, gave a much better showing than last week, and improved as he went on. Metal Bird jumped well.
