CHESS
South Canterbury Championships Final Stages Reached Play in the South Canterbury chess championships was taken almost to the final stages last night, when further matches were decided in the South School. Section A was finalised, resulting in a win for O. N. Thomson, who went through all his games without either a loss or a draw. In sections B and C several matches remain to be played, but it is hoped to commence the finals next Tuesday O. N. Thomson v. E. Wallace— Answering Wallace’s orthodox king’s pawn opening with the Sicilian defence, Thomson obtained a good development early, and soon had a pawn advantage, following this up by the winning of a bishop which was trapped on the sixth rank. When Wallace took protsetion from a rook, Thomson took the fullest advantage of the oversight on the part of his opponent and brought about a speedy mate. N. A. Moore v. L. H. Tozer—Playing the Guioco Piano, Tozer obtained a good position in the opening stages, but Moore was first to gain the initiative, winning a pawn. An exchange of bishops followed, and on the following move Moore captured a knight, which Tozer regained after a skirmish. Moore, however, sprang a surprise mate with queen and bishop. W. Pearse v. J. Finkelstein—Finkelstein with the white pieces played a solid opening game, and entered the middle game with an even position. Both queens were exchanged off early, but both men then queened pawns. After Pearse had successfully pawned his third queen he obtained a pretty mate after a hard and interesting game. Detailed Results Detailed results were:— Section A Thomson beat Wallace. Section C Moore beat Tozer. Pearse beat Finkelstein.
