FIRST TIME BEFORE COURT By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, October 31. A fine of £3O was imposed on John Culleton, who pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court In Wellington today to a charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker on or about October 27. Culleton was allowed one month in which to pay the fine. He had not previously been before the Court. WHANGAREI CASES EIGHT MEN BEFORE COURT By Telegraph—Press Association WHANGAREI, October 31. Fines totalling £3lB were inflicted by the Magistrate this morning on eight defendants charged as the outcome of a Police raid on Saturday. Arthur Clark was fined £lOO for using premises as a gaming house. A bookmaking business was run as a side-line to dry-cleaning, said a detective. Arthur Lambess, tobacconist, and Charles Schon were similarly fined. All had previous convictions. The other defendants were fined small sums.
