Fate of Unhappy People Thousands Forced Over Frontier Polish Assistance To Refugees United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received October 31, 9.5 p.m.) BERIZN, October 31. Six thousand deported Poles, mostly Jews, were permitted to go home to Germany, amid scenes of joyful reunion. Those expelled from Germany followed, speeded up by the guards, who fired pistol shots over their heads and warned them not to look back, under pain of death. Four are reported to have died. Several women gave birth to children in no-man’s-land, or at the border stations. Seven thousand Polish Jews were allowed to cross the frontier from Germany. Those arriving at Chojnice complain of brutal treatment by the Germans, but praise the conduct of the Polish authorities.
