CALL FOR INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT

General endorsement will be given the views expressed by the Mayor of Timaru on Saturday night in relation to the potential value of industrial development in Timaru in particular and South Canterbury in general. Citizens generally will moreover agree with the Mayor that municipal expansion depends upon the provisions that can be made for the expanding operation of secondary industries that will provide employment for the people. It will be generally agreed, that industrial development in this district has been inexplicably slow, in face of the favourable geographical position of Timaru and the facilities provided for transport, as well as other essential services that are vital to the success of industries providing employment for numbers of citizens. In saying that the municipal authorities will co-operate iu every way with schemes that would provide additional employment and revenue that would materially aid Gie progress of the town, the Mayor is reiterating what has been said before by former Mayors and municipal representatives. Efforts have been made to induce interested parties to take into account this district’s claim to be regarded as a suitable place for the establishment of new industries or the extension of established industries, but although so far not much success has been achieved in this direction, the Mayor’s fresh pledge of municipal encouragement is timely in view of industrial development elsewhere.
