GOLF MACKAY SENIOR CHAMPION

Highfield Titles Decided Intermediate to Galloway J. L. Mackay won the senior championship of the Timaru Club at Highfield yesterday when he beat D. J. McBeath five up and four to play. It was an interestnig final, but, was productive of only fair golf. The links were in good order, and the weather was perfect. A good gallery followed the players. Mackay was five up in the morning, and although Mcßeath fought back gamely in the afternoon, Mackay, who was runner-up to J. Linton last year, was always ahead and made the most of his advantage. There was plenty of give and take in the morning, but the golf was not up to expectations. Mackay made mistakes which were not in keeping with his splendid form throughout the season, while Mcßeath's putting was not of the best. The standard definitely improved when the players settled down on the Inward stretch. In the afternoon Mcßeath failed to make the most of several opportunities for wins on the greens. Mackay was again below form. He duffed several drives — usually a very strong point in his game —and putted indifferently. The match had an interesting beginning. Mcßeath’s second stopped at the top of the green and he played a very fine approach within 18 Inches of the hole. Mackay’s second cannoned off Mcßeath’s third and sat on the rim of the hole leaving Mcßeath a dead stymie, and allowing Mackay to win 4-5. The Slope was halved in fives, but Mackay became two up when he won the next 4-5. Bumpy was halved in fours after Mackay had again stymied

his opponent. Winning Hillside with a well-played four to Mcßeath’s five, Mackay became three up. Threes were registered at the Knob for a half, the outward journey being completed with halves at the next three for Mackay to turn three up. Mackay was out in 36 to Mcßeath’s 40. At Seaview Mcßeath’s second landed on the edge of the green and shot into a bunker. He played a brilliant approach and secured a half in five. The Dive was halved in regulation threes, while Mcßeath made up leeway at Poplars with a “birdie” four. Mackay regained his three up lead at Port Arthur with a three when his opponent missed a hard putt. Two good fours were recorded at the Terrace, but Mackay took Plantation after chipping down from the top of the green and holing his fourth. A perfectly played four gave Mcßeath Midway. The Gap was halved in fives, Mackay finishing five up with a “birdie” at Home. Mackay completed the course in 74, Mcßeath being five strokes away. Lost Opportunities Holing a long putt for a three at North East, Mcßeath took the first hole of the afternoon, while he knocked another off Mackay’s morning margin with a four at the Slope. Both lapsed at the third which Mackay won with a six. Bumpy was halved in three. Mackay left the gate open at Burnside, but McBeath, three putting, allowed him to halve in five. Mcßeath again looked to have a good chance at the Knob when Mackay’s tee shot was very short, but he chipped short and a half in four was carded. Two perfect tee shots were despatched from the Ridge Ire and regulation threes were recorded. McBeath struck trouble at the Chasm when his drive found the rough, and his second was out of bounds, Mackay again becoming five up with a goc ’ four. It was Mackay’s turn to go out of bounds at Lindsay’s when, following an indifferent tee shot, his second bounced over the western gorse fence, and his next was through the green. Mcßeath turned four down after a well-played four. Botl. players were close to the pin at Seaview for three

but Mcßeath putted better and a four made him three down. The Dive was halved in three. Mcßeath was too strong with his fourth after reaching Poplars green in three and Mackay made no mistake with a five. The Terrace brought the match to a close. In view of the following breeze Mackay chose an iron and was handily placed. Mcßeath’s drive hit the edge of the bunker and bounced down. He played a good second, but was still short of the mark, Mackay being well placed on the green. Mcßeath was still a good distance from the pin with the third

and Mackay had little trouble in rattling the cup for a four to take the match.

R. L. Galloway Takes Intermediate Maintaining the consistency which he has shown in the latter part of the season, R. L. Galloway won the intermediate title from v. T. Nicholas, four and three. Both were out in 43 in the morning with Nicholas two up. Galloway made several good recoveries on the trip home and the 18 finished with him one up with a round of 87, Nicholas taking 92. There was little between the

players in the early afternoon, when Nicholas showed improvement. Galloway covered the first nine in 40 to be three up, Nicholas being only a stroke away. After halving seaview, Galloway won the Dive with a regulation three, the next four being halved to give him the match. Although both men were steady in their long game their short work often proved costly. S. P. McDougall Wins Junior Producing his best golf this season, S. P. McDougall had an easy passage throughout the junior match against W. J. Smith whom he defeated ten and eight. McDougall beat R. S. Baird one up on Saturday and Smith entered the final with a win over G. E. Davies three and one earlier in the week. McDougall was seven up In the morning fter a splendid 83, and making few mistakes he was never troubled to score a convincing win.
