Speed pays better than stamina. Ajax was not capable of winning a Derby last season, and he has won only one race up to ten furlongs, but his winnings total approximately £23,075, for just over two years’ racing. The mile race at Flemington on Thursday promises to be just appearance money for him, and without going beyond ten furlongs it will be possible for him to approach the £30,000 mark if he keeps sound till the autumn. The son of Heroic has started 23 times for 19 wins, the last 12 in succession, and before the week is out he should be only five behind Gloaming's and Desert Gold’s sequences of 19.
