OPTIMISM “PETERS OUT’’ REACTION TO WORLD AFFAIRS United Piess Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received Otcober 30, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, October 28. The optimism with which the markets began the week largely petered out, but the undertone is steady. The amount of business, although small, has considerably improved. Politics remain the principal adverse factor, particularly the uncertainty surrounding British policy, and the result in diplomatic moves, including Herr von Ribbentrop’s visit to Rome. There has been considerable buying of armament shares. Giltedgeds slipped back, and European bonds weakened. There has been a fair turnover of Dominion bonds, notably Australians; the price changes were slight. FOREIGN EXCHANGES. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, October 28. Foreign exchange quotations—Dollar, 4.764 to the pound; franc, 1782 to the pound; guilder, 8744 to the pound. THE PRICE OF GOLD. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, October 28. The current price of fine gold is 145/104 per ounce.
