WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
WASHDYKE The Washdyke Women’s Institute celebrated its seventh birthday party recently there being a large crowd present. All neighbouring Institutes were well represented. The president (Mrs W. Kellahan) welcomed all present, and introduced members of the Town Women’s Guild, who were in charge of the afternoon's entertainment, which was most deligthfully carried out. A short play was much enjoyed by all present and numerous musical and elocutionary items were also well received.
Afternoon tea was served by members, after which the cake cutting ceremony took place. The seven candles were lit by Mrs A. G. Brown (Geraldine), who extended best wishes and congratulated the Institute. The candles were extinguished by Miss K. Connoll (secretary), who asked Mrs W. Kellahan to cut the cake, which was made by Mrs J. King and iced by Mrs McDuff. The vice-president, Mrs McDuff, took the opportunity of presenting the president, secretary and treasurer, with a beautiful shoulder spray.
At the conclusion of the entertainment each member of the Town Women’s Guild was presented with a shoulder spray. The hall was beautifully decorated with bowls of spring flowers, which were judged by Mrs W. G. Tweedy and Mrs McAlister, the result being Mrs James 1, Mrs Doak 2. Spring blooms, 4 in a jar—Mrs Doak 1 and 2. Premier bloom—Mrs W. Kellahan 1, Mrs James 2. A jar of magnificent show blooms were kindly sent by Mrs Sherris, Clandeboye.
The following prizes for the year were presented by Mrs Tweedy— Seniors, combined handcraft and cooking, Mrs J. King 1 (donated b y Mrs Glenday); handcraft, Mrs J. King and Mrs Darling (eqi.al) 1 (prizes donated by Mrs A. B. Ramsay); cooking—Mrs J. King 1 (donated by Mrs W. Dwan, Rosewill).
Juniors, Miss 'E. Pearce, combined points 1 (donated by Mrs W. King, Rosewill).

WAITUNA The October meeting of the Waituna Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs H. Jackson, vice-president, who read the Mary Stewart Collect and the members joined in singing the Instltfite Song.
A letter was read from the South Canterbury Federation Executive thanking all who had given such willing help and assistance at the halfyearly Council meeting on October 12, and also giving a reminder about the formation meeting of ti.o new Federation to be held In the hall at Makikihl on November 17, when ’ *rs R. Kelso, Dominion organiser, will officiate.
The roll call for the day was “Your Full Name.”
At this stage the members of the Studholme Women’s Institute took charge of the meeting and carried through am interesting programme. Mrs G. Murray sang two songs, which were much appreciated. Miss J. Hunter gave an interesting demonstration on brass work, showing a handsome brass fire-screen and explaining very clearly how the work is done. Mrs Henshaw carried out a “Kitchen and Washhouse” competition, which created much amusement. Mrs Jackson thanked the Studholme Women’s Institute members for giving a pleasant hour to a sister institute. The competition for the afternoon resulted:—Knitted soft toy, Mrs Morgan 1, Mrs J. L. Smith 2, Mrs H. Christie 3. Kisses, Mrs W. Smart 1. Mrs J. L. Smith 2, Mesdames L. Robinson, J. O’Brien, and H. Christie (equal) 3. Flowers, best bloom, Mrs Hooper 1. Mrs J. L. Smith 2, Mrs H. Christie 3. Specified bloom, Mrs J. L. Smith 1, Mrs Robinson 2. Decorative, Mrs J. L. Smith 1, Mrs Jackson 2, Mrs Robinson 3.
