TWO TRIALS

Bennie Bear’s most costly importation, Gus Lesnevich, has been matched with Ron Richards and Ambrose Palmer, the first fight to take place at Sydney Sports Ground next month. Lesnevich is in splendid condition, having knocked out Stanley Hasrady on July 20. Jack Dempsey was referee. His greatest fight was against Lou Brouillard, former welter and middle champion, to whom he gave such a hiding that Lou quit the game. The New York Boxing Commission, after taking the light-heavy title from John Henry Lewis, decided that Tiger Jack Fox, Al Gainer and Lesnevich should compete for the championship, but Borden had signed up for the Australian trip and Gainer declined, as he had already defeated Fox. “I figured it out that it would be better to come to Australia, even if I wanted to get out of the contract,” said Lesnevich. "Wins against your best would add strength to our claims back home.”

Among the boxers known to Australians whom Lesnevich has defeated are Sabatino, Tom Chaster, Ray Actis, Young Struhley and Mark Hough. In 65 fights since turning professional after winning the golden gloves in 1933-34, he has been beaten only by Freddie Steel and Young Corbett, and cut eyes were responsible in each instance.
