GERALDINE CLUB

Recent Meeting District Trust Account A satisfactory account was disclosed in the balance sheet presented by the secretary in connection with the recent race meeting at the monthly meeting of the Geraldine Racing Club on Thursday night. Those present were the president, Mr D. Macdonald), and Messrs J. D. McKechnie, C. Stock, A. G. Macdonald, A. J. Burmester, W. Quirke, A. South, G. Fletcher, J. Reid, J. C. Bisdee and the secretary, Mr W. F. Evans. . In a letter to the club, the secretary of the South Canterbury Rugby Union, Mr F. J. Cook, wrote thanking the club for the invitation to members of the Wellington Rugby touring team at the first day of the club’s meeting. Every member of the party present was enthusiastic in his appreciation of the opportunity and hospitality extended. His Union was particularly grateful, as it enabled them to send the party away from South Canterbury enthusiastic about the happy time spent while there. The secretary of the Canterbury District Committee (Mr F. H. T. Bell) wrote that his committee had recently discussed the matter of the depleted state of the Canterbury District Trust Account, and had decided that it was necessary for steps to be taken to restore the fund to a reasonable figure. The fund existed for the purpose of rendering financial assistance to destitute persons connected with racing, the letter continued, and to provide ambulance facilities at race meetings. Owing to the lack of finance donations to clubs for the latter purpose’ have been discontinued for some years past, and calls on the funds were liable to be made at any time, and the income derived from fines, etc., was insufficient to provide for necessitous cases. At the moment the Canterbury District Fund was almost exhausted/ whereas the committees in other Metropolitan districts all had satisfactory balances at their disposal. His committee felt that the building up of the fund would be readily realised by the committees of the Canterbury District Clubs, and it had been decided to request an annual contribution from each club an amount representing sixpence in the pound of the one-fifth rebate of totalistator tax. It was also anticipated that over a period covering three or four seasons a sufficient sum of money would be received to render further contributions unnecessary.

An enclosed statement showed that each club would contribute on the basis suggested and calculated on the 19371938 season figures. The Geraldine Racing Club's contribution Was on the basis as follows: Investments £19,569 10/-; 5 per cent, totallsator tax £973 9/6; one-fifth rebate £194/13/10; 6d in the £ £4/17/-.

The president, Mr D. Macdonald, said he thought all clubs should contribute to the scheme. ,

It was agreed that the club make contributions.
