Trotting • Oct. 29 —Invercargill T.C. Oct 29—Thames T.C. Nov. 8. 10, 11—N.Z. Metropolitan T.C. Nov. 19—Wellington T.C. Nov. 24, 26—Forbury Park T.C. Dec. 3—Waikato T.C. The VJJ.C. spring meeting will open at Flemington to-day.

Gentleman Joe, who won as an unhoppled trotter at Greymouth, is to race with hopples at Motukarara. There will be racing to-day at Gisborne, Motukarara. Bulls, and Rotorua; and trotting at Wellington, Invercargill and Thames.

Dictate has been paid up for in the two open races at the Banks Peninsula meeting, but will probably start in the Buchanan Memorial.

The principal events at Flemington to-day are the Derby, Maribyrnong Plate (for two-year-olds), Cantala Handicap, and MacKinnon Stakes.

The Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington, in which Ajax and Royal Chief will meet to-day, is timed to start at 5 p.m. (N.Z. time) and the Derby at 5.40.

Snowy Bingen will make a return to the pacing gait when he completes at Hutt Park. Since being taken over by J. F. Cotton he has been educated as a trotter.

Ajax has yet to win a mile and a quarter race, but form points to him holding off Royal Chief in the MacKinnon Stakes at Flemington to-day. Beyond that distance the New Zealander would be favoured.

Sly Fox, Triune, Gay Son, Peter Beckford, The Buzzer, The Bigot, Daniel Defoe, Rakahanga, Lord Midas, Baran, Lady Chat and Happy Landing have arrived at Riccarton for the New Zealand Cup meeting.

The unhoppled pacer Newie’s Last was credited with stepping 3.13 4-5 in the Jellicoe Handicap at Auckland, and then was only fourth, Noble Prince, in receipt of 60 yards, going 3.18. Six-teen-year-old Harold Logan, on 144 behind, would have had to break 3.6 to win—and the New Zealand record is 3.13 1-5.

Maori Song, who has not left New Zealand, was left in the Cantala Stakes at Flemington through ignorance of the conditions. In New Zealand, it is necessary to notify acceptance for all handicaps; in important handicaps in Victoria a horse has to be withdrawn or it is regarded as a potential starter.

A record which must be unequalled in New Zealand is that which is held by Mr George Spriggens, of Wanganui, in connection with the operation of the totallsator at the Waverley Racing Club's meeting. Mr Spriggens has been concerned with the running of the totalisator at Waverley for 58 years. Mr C. B. Kellow, who won the A.J.C. and Victoria Derbies five years ago with Hallmark, appears almost certain to complete the double again this year with Nuffield. Hallmark supplemented his Derby successes by winning the Melbourne Cup. D. Munro, who steered Hallmark, will be on Nuffield to-day.

Foxlove, who won a double at Gore, has been widely heralded as quite the best hack produced at Gore. That is an extravagant estimate, as in the second race he won he was weighted at 191 b ’below Lord Nuffield and 161 b below Cintllla. The best hack at the meeting was probably Mona's Song, a stable mate of Foxlove.

Winner of the Hunters’ Hurdles at Cambridge on Monday, Little Briton was one of the outstanding ponies in the New Zealand polo team which won the championship in New South Wales last year. An aged gelding by Little England from a Maniopoto mare, Little Briton has another engagement at Rotorua to-day.

The most promising pacer seen out at Greymouth was Mankind, who won a double in impressive style on Saturday. He was never off the bit in winning his first race, and in the second event, in beating Colonel Axworthy, though he was ridden out, he was not punished, and was always pacing evenly. He looks certain to reach better classes.

The Ashburton Trotting Cup, to be run on Boxing Day, will be worth £9OO, the limit being 4.26. The distance of the Boxing Day Handicap (£4OO, 2.44 class) has been extended to 10J furlongs, to avoid the start being made on a turn. The Champion Stakes, for three-year-olds, is endowed to the extent of £750, and the total prize money for the day is £3lOO. • * • * New Zealand-bred horses are likely to be prominent in several events at Flemington to-day. Bonheur de Fere is expected to run into a place in the Wakeful Stakes, and Beau Mari (another Beau Pere) will probably be favourite for the Maralyrong Plate. Royal Chief will run in the Mackinnon Stakes and Gold Rod is a popular fancy for the Cantala Handicap. • • . . Beaupartlr, still a maiden has been left In the Derby, and there are people in the Bay who declare that this Beau

Pere colt will run into a place. Beaupartir has been beaten into second place in the three races he has had to date, but they have been narrow defeats and he is probably the most lllcely maiden at present racing. The Spring Plate at Riccarton will be his next engagement, but there he will be up against Disdain.

Fixed penalties for the Banks Peninsula meeting have resulted in Kilrobe being raised to the same weight as Nightcalm, and to 51b above Golden Chest. Kilrobe may beat this pair, but revealed form gives her little chance with Nightcalm, a winner in the open class. Rousseau has gone up 71b in the Buchanan Memorial, and while he can shed this, by an apprentice allowance his future handicaps will be based on the higher weight if he flukes a place.

Malagigi will make his first South Island appearance to-day at Motukarara. The Paladin gelding has not raced since he won the Mitchelson Cup at Auckland, and a race this afternoon should help to tune him up for the Cup next week. Maligigl has not yet tackled a two-mlle journey, but he has won twice over a mile and a half. Another North Islander booked to compete at the Banks Peninsula meeting is Padishah, who also has won over the same distance—in the Wellington Cup.

Riders for the Banks Peninsula meeting are announced as follows: A. Messervy, Happy Night, Nightcalm, Romarin, West Wind, Miss Buff; A. G. Parsons. Wine Card, Great Baby, Lady Middleham, Second Innings; A. E. Ellis, Screamer, Chirp, Willie Win, Garonne, Gironde; M. Caddy, Cocksure, Nigella, Comus; R. Caddy, Leaderette, Real Lady, Silver Lark; C. Good class fields will be seen at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting at Hutt Park to-day. Horses likely to be in demand include:— Petone Handicap— Tonee, Dollar Maid, Sagamore. Short Handicap—Mazaire, Mongolian Cavatina. Borough Handicap—Taruna, Stamboul, Perula. October Handicap—Silver Guy, Ferry Post, Phllarlo. President’s Handicap Sagamore, Dollar Maid, Tonee. Novice Handicap—Mazaire, Mongolian, Cavatina. Suburban Handicap—Taruna, Sentiment, Stamboul. Electric Handicap—Silver Guy, Ferry Post, Philario. Form at the Banks Peninsula meeting is not usually very illuminating so far as the Cup meeting is concerned, but there is material for good contests at Motukarara to-day. Backers may prefer the following:— Trial Stakes—Nigella, Rex Maitland, Chirp. Kaituna High Weight Aggravate, Manetho, Superex. Devauchelle Trot—Fragment, Sure Potts, Lady Vasclyne. Buchanan Handicap—Dictate, Malagigi, Last Refrain. Halswell Hack—Financiere, Flame Queen, Rebellion. Le Bon’s Handicap—Cocksure, Lady Leigh, Paper Slipper. Little River Trot —Dancing Pirate, Gay Lady, Tinker. Brackenfeld Handicap—Romaru, Gironde, Screamer. The Invercargill Trotting Club’s spring meeting will be held to-day. The South Canterbury acceptors include Blue Spark, Oasis, and Indian Scout. The following should be prominent;—

Novice Handicap—Dunalister, Willowbank, Flash Guy. Menowal Handicap—Jock McGrath, Indian Scout, Lady Ede. Thompson Handicap—Capri, Oasis, Happy Locande. Invercargill CUp—Blue Spark, Roan Duke, Salalon. Crescent Handicap—Edith Grattan, Gold Bank. Travis Memorial—Jock McGrath, Indian Scout, Jenny's Guy. Takitimu Handicap—Rapidian, Wollowbank, Ebb Tide.
