GOOD OLD BOB

Up in the hills lived an old shepherd and his dog Bob. In the mornings Bob used to take the sheep and lambs out on the hills to feed and bring them back at night. One day while Bob was out with the sheep it began to snow heavily, so he hurriedly began to round up the sheep and it was not very long before he had them back at the hut. There the old shepherd began to count “One, two, three," and so on up to ninety-eight. Then he turned to Bob and said, “Two missing, Bob.” At once Bob was off, and soon he was looking everywhere that sheep and lambs might be likely to hide. He was away up near the top of a hill when he heard a faint “Baa!” He turned quickly and saw in a hollow two little lambs. He at once began to scrape back the snow ana one of the lambs jumped out but the other was too weak to get out by itself; Bob jumped down to it and, grabbing it by the back of the neck, he scrambled out and was soon on his way home, the other lamb following him. When he got back to the hut the old shepherd put the lambs in a warm box by the fire. If it had not been for Bob the lambs would have died out in the cold snow. (3 Marks to Ngaire Best, Timaru.)

prize in Merry’s hands. It was a large doll in a beautiful silk dress, and when Merry reached home she took it straight to her mother. “This is the prize,” she said, “and I think I like her almost as well as my flower doll. But I think I’ll have her loan her silk dress to Rosylee and her earrings to Raggymuffin, because I believe their feelings were hurt, though they didn’t say a word.” And then she unclasped her fingers from about the wilting flower-, doll. “Oh, see,” she said, "she's vanishing.” “Yes,” replied her mother, “but to-morrow you can make another just as pretty.” “How lovely,” cried Merry. "I’ll always have a new one hiding in the garden!”
