“BAVENSTOCK” SEARING IRON MAKES TAILING SAFER AND CLEANER Nowadays, with more modern methods of farming and increased topdressing of pastures practised by farmers, diseases in sheep and lambs unfortunately seem to be on the increase, One of the greatest losses in stock suffered by farmers to-day, despite every precaution taken, is the loss of lambs as a result of disease germs entering the open wounds after docking. Farmers who have practised searing in recent years have proved that the method very considerably reduces blood poisoning, arthritis and stiff joints in lambs. Apart altogether from these important aspects, the fact that lambs thrive so much better immediately after being tailed by this method instead of by the knife, warrants it a trial.

The Baverstock Searing Iron has been designed to replace the old method of heating irons in a fire-can. It is the only searing iron on the market that is heated internally, and consequently maintains a continuous, even heat. This is most important as only at the correct temperature can bleeding be completely eliminated and the wound safely sealed against fatal disease germs that may otherwise enter. By the use of this instrument, together with the efficient emasculators now on the market, no loss of blood occurs, and many farmers are emphatic in their belief that lambs recover from the operation almost Immediately and receive practically no set-back at all. This is not so when the knife is used.

The most Important point in favour of the use of the Instrument is that the tall is severed and at the same moment the wound is automatically sealed and left clean. It Is not even necessary to apply disinfectants of any kind. Lambs so tailed, Instead of lying weakened by loss of blood on perhaps disease infected ground, will be seen to find their mothers soon, after the operation and suffer little apparent discomfort.

The Baverstock Searing Iron is constructed to give years of service. Nickleplated and will not rust. It burns clear untreated petrol and the fount, which holds half a pint, will burn at a searing temperature from one and a half to three hours without refilling, according to weather conditions. Weight, 3Jlb. Length, 17in. Width of blade, 2Sln. The outfit consists of Searing Iron Complete; 1 measuring can; petrol filter; pcmp and spanner. Price £5 The Baverstock Searing Iron is being demonstrated at the stand of Pyne Gould Guinness, Ltd. <6)
