DAIRY AFFAIRS IN SOUTH CANTERBURY

To the Ec tor of “ The Timaru Herald ” Sir.—Some time ago there was intense dissatisfaction among the South Canterbury cream suppliers of the Ashburton Dairy Company. This dissatisfaction reached such a pitch that the Hon. Lee Martin found it imperative to come to South Canterbury to straighten things out. This he did, but apparently for only the time being, as the Company have now slipped back into their old ways. Complaints of grading, tests, weights, and missing cream seem to be fairly general. After the Hon. Lee Martin’s visit four South Canterbury representatives were appointed to the Ashburton Dairy Company directorate to look after the interests of the cream suppliers of the district, and what are these gentle men, who were all directors of the local factories before these factories were bought out by Ashburton, doing? Evidently by the present state of affairs they too have been absorbed by Ashburton, or perhaps they just do not bother. Unless our directors prove themselves capable of getting the cream suppliers in South Canterbury a fair deal, it looks as though the Hon. Lee Martin will be required here again very soon. With reference to belated cheques, I might state that my cheque for September, due on October 20, was posted in Ashburton on ‘he 26t1) inst. Under these circumstances discounts allowed on the 20th are lost to the cream supplier.—l am, etc., NOT SATISFIED.
